About Tempe, Az

Tempe is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. In 2020, it has a population of just over 180,000. Tempe is bordered by Phoenix and Guadalupe on the west, Chandler on the south, Scottsdale and the Salt River Prima-Maricopa Indian Community on the north, and Mesa on the east.

The city was named after the Vale of Tempe in Greece. The present day site of the city grew from two settlements called "Hayden's Ferry." The ferry became a key crossing area at the Haden Butte area. The Tempe Irrigating Canal Company established in the 19th century provided water for its early agricultural development where wheat, barley, alfalfa, oats, and cotton were grown.

Tempe became an economic hub near the turn of the century because of its vital location along the Maricopa and Phoenix Ralilroad route. In 1885, the Territorial Normal School, what will soon become Arizona State University, was established in 1885. Tempe continues to be the home of its first and largest campus.

Today, Tempe Az is a center of education and commerce within the Phoenix metropolitan area. Tempe is home to DriveTime, a Fortune 500 company. Large companies, such as Carvana, NortonLifeLick, Salt River Project, and First Solar also have headquarters in Tempe. One of Arizona's largest malls, Arizona Mills, is located near its border with Guadalupe.
